Caption Robert M. Chanock
Description Dr. Robert Chanock when he was appointed as chief of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ Laboratory of Infectious Diseases in 1968. Dr. Chanock received his M.D. from the University of Chicago in 1947 and worked with Dr. Albert Sabin from 1950 to 1952 and then again from 1954 to 1956. Dr. Chanock joined the U.S. Public Health Service and came to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, Laboratory of Infectious Diseases in July 1957. In 1959 he became chief of NIAID’s Respiratory Virus Section and in 1968 chief of the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Chanock has conducted research on adenoviruses, parainfluenza viruses, primary atypical pneumonia, the Norwalk Viruses, and respiratory syncytial viruses.
