Description U.S. Surgeon General Walter Wyman in uniform. Dr. Wyman was appointed in 1891 as the third Marine Hospital Service Surgeon General. Wyman oversaw the expansion of the Hygienic Laboratory and the Service’s expansion into immigration and quarantine activities. During his tenure the name of the Service was changed to Public Health and Marine Hospital Service. Dr. Wyman served as Surgeon General until his death in 1911.
