Title Faraday Fire Alarm Box: Building 2
Description Steel. A wall plate enameled red with steel edges exposed. A red light is at the top of the door. The door opens with a handle and inside is stamped in ink "April 3, 1969." Raised letters on the plate read "FIRE ALARM, OPEN DOOR, PULL LEVER." There is also a metal plate with the alarm number "2-2-4-2." Inside the compartment is a lever that pulls down. A metal plate behind it has printed on it "When Trouble Bell Rings Wind <----." A small keyhole is labelled "Silent test." There is an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers sticker on the top of the inside of the box with identifying number of "E73048640." The back of the alarm has a cylinder containing winding mechanism and wires. The wires are labelled by letter. The cylinder is steel in red enamel.

Provenance These was part of Building 2 on the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The building was constructed in 1937-38 as a state-of-the-art laboratory building for the time, but this alarm was installed as part of a renovation in the late 1960s-early 1970s.
