Provenance H. Hartridge invented the reversion spectroscope for his famous experiments with Roughton on the rate of oxygenation/deoxygenation of hemoglobin. This instrument remained useful long after the Beckman DU or the Cary II spectrophotometers became available but ceased to have much purpose when computational enhancement of spectra became widely available.
