MacLean was known for his work on the functions of the limbic system in organizing drive states and behaviors concerned with self and species preservation. His experiments to determine the precise location of areas in the limbic system concerned with sexual functions opened up important areas of study pertaining to the selective affinity and vulnerability of the hippocampus to certain biochemical agents. MacLean got his BA and MD from Yale in 1935 and 1940, and joined the Laboratory of Neurophysiology at NIMH in 1957.
