Catalog type History
Provenance The melting point of compounds helps to identify what they are. According to Arthur H. Thomas Co. Catalog 61, page 657, this set is: "electrically heated with thermometers calibrated for the individual stage. For determining micro melting points by means of a microscope. Microscopic study of single crystals permits observation of changes in the sample before, during and after melting. In addition to permitting observation of the changes from unstable through metastable to stable modifications on single crystals, the hot stage is useful for micro-preparative work, sublimations, measurement of refractive index, fusions, evaporations, distillations, etc."

This design was based on the work of German Ludwig Kofler during the 1930s-1940s. The reagents in the vials provided substances with known melting point temperatures.
Notes Restrictions: mercury in thermometer
