Title Dr. Dorland J. Davis’ U.S. Public Health Service Officer’s Hat
Description White fabric top with black band around the bottom. Visor and center of band have embroidery with gold thread (middle of band is U.S. PHS shield with eagle and anchor, on visor is leaves). Button on sides to hold chin strap (right-hand button gone). Strap is leather with gold fabric with maroon stripe in middle. Inside hat is banded with leather. Dr. Davis’ card is sewn into a plastic-protected slot. Size 7 3/8". Shield in blue and maroon of "Art Caps".

Provenance Dr. Dorland J. Davis was Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1964-1975. He was a virologist who joined the Public Health Service in 1939 in NIH’s infectious diseases division. During the next to decades he worked on poliomyelitis, viral hepatitis, and influenza among other infectious diseases. From 1954-1956 he was chief of the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases, NIAID in building 7, and served as the NIAID’s scientific director until becoming director in 1964.
