Provenance Invented by Dr. Theodor Kolobow, NHLBI. From patent 5,722,395, dated March 3, 1998: "An ultra thin walled wire reinforced endotracheal tubing includes a thin walled tubing comprising a polymeric material having a spring material incorporated therewith...results in a significant decrease in resistance to air flow through the endotracheal tubing." Dr. Kolobow also patented the apparatus for making the tubing in patent 5,785,998, dated July 28, 1998. He spent much of his career searching for ways to increase the effectiveness of ventilation of patients while reducing infection.
